Wilma Ruth Monday was born February 18, 1952 to the union of Willie James and Tommie Jean Buckner in Altus, Oklahoma. After graduating high school in Altus, she married Harry B. Johnson to which union a daughter, Tara, was born. The family then moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. Wilma relocated the family to Lubbock, Texas where she met and married George W. Thomas, to which union a daughter, LaTonya was born. Wilma attended nursing school at Texas Tech; however, due to a traumatic accident was not able to pursue a career in nursing. Despite her disability, Wilma was instrumental in helping the children and elderly in every community she resided in.
She was on the board of several nonprofit organizations, including setting up a reading program and library in Bailey Housing Authority for under served children. She was a member of EVP Social Aid Club, a member of the Isabel Smith Club where she served as District Champlain, and held various other positions for nonprofit organizations over the course of her life.
Wilma was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for the children. She had extensive knowledge of the Bible and could always be called upon to explain a scripture.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents Willie James, and Tommie Jean Buckner, 2 sisters Gladys Goodlow and Della Porter, 3 brothers, Willie James Buckner Jr, Howard Buckner Sr, and Franklin Buckner Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters; Tara Barnes(Fort Worth, TX.), LaTonya Thomas (Fort Worth, TX.), 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 3 sisters; Beverly Smith (Wichita Falls), Dorothy Hicks (Wichita Falls) and Sharon Epperson (Radcliff, KY.), 2 brothers; Delbert Buckner (Wichita Falls), and Robert Epperson, Jr. (Altus, OK.)
