Rev. Robert Hunter Obituary

Robert L. Hunter was born July 13, 1939, in Wichita Falls, Texas.  He was the firstborn of the late Irene Butler Hunter and Henry Butler.  Bobby was the apple of his dear grandmother Nona Butler’s eye.  Nona spoiled her first grandchild.  Robert often talked about his loving grandmother.  He was very much aware that she loved him and would purchase him anything that he wanted.

He joined Antioch Baptist Church at an early age.  He served as a Teacher, Usher, Superintendent, and Deacon.  He served faithfully in these capacities until he was called to pastor at Greater St. Mark Baptist Church for over 36 years.  He was a devoted pastor until his health failed him.

His education consisted of him being a graduate of the historic Booker T. Washington High School: Graduate of Draughon’s Business College with honors: Graduate of Vernon Junior College with a Business degree and a Bachelor of Art and Business Degree from Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He also served his country by joining the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1959.

Reverend Hunter acknowledged his call to the ministry under the pastorate of the late J. C. Thompson at the Antioch Baptist Church. Robert would preach whenever he got a chance even after his health failed him,  he would preach to the residents at Senior Care Convalescent Home.  He had a very good Christian roommate.  When Robert decided to pray or preach day or night, his roommate would respect what was going on and pay homage to the Lord.  When his wife would come to feed him in the afternoon, some of the residents would say, “Tell Robert to preach, I love to hear him preach and pray.”

Reverend Hunter served as president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance for four years.  He enjoyed meeting with his brothers in Christ.

Robert met and married Willie Mae Stevenson Hunter.  They had a wonderful relationship.  They were married for 56 years.  This August would have been 57 years.  They had one daughter, Wanda LaGale and he spoiled her.  He wanted LaGale to grow up to be an outstanding educated citizen.  He was the overseer of her grades in school and college and Para Legal College.  He wanted her to learn to play the piano.  He paid for nine years of piano lessons under the great late Jimmie Berry. La Gale did not disappoint him.  She felt the love he had for her.  When he lost his eyesight, she said Daddy, “I will be your eyes for you”.  She kept her promise.

Reverend Hunter, “Bobby” leaves his loving wife, Willie Mae of 56 years, and one daughter, Wanda LaGale.  One Sister, Ruby L. Henderson; a host of nieces and nephews, five loving cousins, Nazaree and Henry Butler Jr., Willie of Indiana, and Leslie and Patricia Logan.
