She decided to follow some of her other siblings and moved herself and growing family to Rochester, New York in 1963.  She was an active member of the Black Panther Organization, whose goals were to empower the community through social and economic reform.  She was passionate about fairness and equality, hard work and responsibility. She also had a passion for music and she could sing! In the mid 60’s she begin traveling as lead back up singer for the famous jazz/blues instrumentalist, Chuck Mangione, he played a flugelhorn.  She traveled all over the northern states and even up to Canada.  She gave up her singing career to raise, as a single parent, her seven children.

Her next job found her as a case manager for CCA - Correctional Corporation of America.  This was a pre-release facility and she worked there until 1993, when she retired from the workforce.
She relocated to Wichita Falls to be near family and friends.  She was known as “MeeMee” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and a slew of people who came to know and love her and was known as Nanie Pat to her nieces and nephews.
