Bethenia (Tubbs) Sumpter Obituary
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (NKJV)
On April 8, 2025, Bethenia Tubbs-Sumpter transitioned from this life to her heavenly home at the age of seventy-seven. She was born on September 12,1947, in Vernon, Texas to the parents of Willie Mae Tubbs-Tillery and John Andrew Tubbs. She was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She attended Booker T. Washington School in Vernon, Texas.
She later moved to Wichita Falls in 1970. Bethenia was a God-fearing woman, who loved the Lord and lived her life by faith. She was a born leader, and wherever she went her leadership was always noticed and acknowledged. She was a servant and had empathy and compassion for the less fortunate, sick, and suffering. Bethenia loved all music, and she loved to worship the Lord in song; always ready and available to sing when called upon. She also served in the women’s mission ministry.
In her spare time, Bethenia loved cooking, baking, and spending time with family and friends. She was actively involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s school activities. She was also a member of the Eastern Stars. She sang in the church choir and worked in housekeeping for many years at the State Hospital, where she met and later married Charles Sumpter.
She is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, three children Cornelius Phillips Jr., Walter Lorenzo Phillips, and Lisa Darlene Phillips.
She leaves to cherish her memories and legacy: a spouse, three sons David Phillips (Ft. Worth), Terry Phillips, Melvin Phillips, a daughter LaTosca Phillips-Brunner (all of Wichita Falls), seven brothers, and six sisters. She was a granny of twenty-one grandchildren, forty one great-grandchildren and known to some as GiGi (great granny).
